MAGNESIUM L-THREONATE

Magnesium L-Threonate is a magnesium supplement that was identified in 2010. Magnesium itself is a crucial mineral necessary for various bodily functions, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood sugar and blood pressure regulation, and energy production. About half of Americans don't get enough magnesium from their diet alone, so supplements can help meet the recommended intake. Magnesium L-Threonate is notable for its potential benefits on brain health, as it may enhance cognition and alleviate pain.

Heading #1: What are Magnesium L-Threonate's Benefits?

Magnesium L-Threonate is a relatively new supplement that shows great promise in supporting brain health and relieving pain.

May Improve Memory: A study involving 109 healthy adults aged 18–65 found that taking two grams of magnesium L-Threonate per day for 30 days significantly improved memory, especially in older participants.

May Relieve Pain: Research on cancer patients using opioids showed that those who took 1.5–2 grams of magnesium L-Threonate needed less morphine after 30–90 days compared to those taking a placebo, suggesting a reduction in pain intensity.

May Relieve Constipation: In the same study, cancer patients also experienced relief from opioid-induced constipation, a common side effect of opioid use.

May Reduce ADHD Symptoms: A small clinical trial with 15 adults indicated that magnesium L-Threonate supplementation for up to 12 weeks resulted in significant improvements in ADHD symptoms, including executive functioning, in almost half of the participants.

Other Potential Benefits: Animal studies suggest that magnesium L-Threonate may also reduce alcohol-induced inflammation, post-surgical pain, and depression, though more human-based research is needed to confirm these benefits.

Heading #2: Recommended Dosages

For adults, the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for total magnesium intake, which includes both food and supplements, are as follows:

  • 19–30 years: 400 mg for males, 310 mg for females

  • 31+ years: 420 mg for males, 320 mg for females

For Magnesium L-Threonate specifically, it is important to follow the dosage recommendations on the supplement label or consult with a healthcare provider, as individual needs may vary.

Common Side Effects: Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal cramps.

These side effects are mainly due to magnesium’s laxative effect and are more likely to occur if taken in excessive amounts.

It is important to note that individual responses to this ingredient can vary based on age, weight, and specific health conditions. Consulting with a healthcare provider is advisable to determine the appropriate dosage according to individual health needs and considerations.
